If you ask me what I love most about my husband, without hesitation I would have to say his sense of adventure. We’ve been traveling together since before we got married and I can truly say I have found my perfect match.Parenthood and Passports -Traveling together

Not only does Damon love to travel also, but he is usually willing to go along with whatever crazy adventure I dream up… ziplining in Costa Rica or hiking through a rainforest with an infant.

This has once again proven true with our upcoming trip to Belize. I booked our hotel this morning, after a brief conversation with my sweet, loving, adventurous husband.

The conversation went like this:

Me: “Babe, I found a cool hotel in Belize. It’s in the middle of the jungle. The rooms don’t have TVs, WiFi, air conditioning or even electrical outlets. Are you cool with that?”
Sweet, loving, adventurous husband: “Sure, did you book it?”
Me: “Not yet, I wanted to run it by you first… In case that whole no electricity thing was a deal breaker… Also, the bats and howler monkeys supposedly can be kind of loud at night. You cool with that, too?”
Sweet, loving, adventurous husband: “Yeah. That sounds cool.”

Now, many people would have responded with something more like “uh, sweet, loving crazy wife of mine, can’t we find somewhere a bit more civilized… You know, with a few more modern conveniences and a few less bats?”

But not my husband. He was totally game, even to the point he would have been completely OK with me booking this type of accommodation without even discussing it first.
Don’t get the wrong idea, I didn’t book us in a dump or anything. With a toddler, we never stay anywhere that is the least bit sketchy. The hotel is actually quite nice and has great reviews on Trip Advisor. It’s nicer than many of the places in the area that do offer modern conveniences. It’s just a bit off the grid. And come on, we’re not going to Belize to sit in our room and watch TV and play on the Internet. I think it’s great for families to unplug on vacation and this place practically forces you to. But I digress.

Back to my sweet, loving, adventurous husband. Although I do the majority of the vacation planning, don’t think for a second that he’s just getting dragged along and tolerating my crazy trips. He plans a few of his own crazy adventures when we are traveling together. I’m usually more than willing to go along with them too… Unless it involves a crazy ski run that is well beyond my personal skill level or comfort.Damon Lane backcountry skiing
Damon loves the outdoors. He skis. He hikes. If there is a mountain involved, he is going to find a way to climb it or strap planks to his feet and go down it. In fact, he is the reason I ever learned to ski. And he is the only reason I can say I’ve conquered a 14,000 foot mountain… And then a second one… While pregnant. (See, he’s dragged me along on some interesting adventures, too.)

My husband’s bucket list

So what’s on my sweet, loving, adventurous husband’s bucket list? When our daughter is old enough (like 10 years old), he wants to take a wonderful family vacation to…. drum roll please…. Antarctica! It’s part of our 10 year family travel bucket list. Talk about going off the grid. I’m fairly certain they don’t have WiFi or electrical outlets in Antarctica either. See, he’s my perfect match! I hope we will be traveling together and embarking on crazy adventures well into our 80s!

To quote the great Dr. Seuss: “We are all a little weird, and life’s a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up in mutual weirdness and call it love.”
